The Vision That Started Straight Jacket.
In 2018, Straight Jacket’s founder wanted to be able to replace his rifle barrels. After many conversations with manufacturers about threaded and chambered barrels pre-fitted for various actions. There were concerns about the safety of sending these barrels out.
The biggest concern was head spacing in the barrels. If you’re new to firearms and unfamiliar with head spacing, we have a video about that. They told Nick that sending barrels to the customer who will work is impossible. That is when he set out to do the impossible.
Seven years later, with the help of Cole Quarnberg as the new owner and operator. Straight Jacket has become a world-class rifle builder. We’ve optimized the machining process used to thread and chamber barrels that headspace. Now, there is no need to send your action in.

This starts with each barrel dialed in one at a time, making every thread and chamber centered with the bore. There are no bulk processes in the barrel-turning process.

The process goes beyond what most are willing to do when building rifles. Our coolant is even scientifically formulated for optimum cutting performance. The flow of the coolant is also factored in to keep the material from going back into the barrel. We cut no corners in the process, doing every barrel to the desired spec.

We realize it’s exciting to get a new rifle. Often, we want to get our product the next day. Waiting until the last minute can make this process seem even worse when you need it now. Lead times have become four-letter words for people. We remain firm in our commitment to quality.
We have also worked hard to streamline our process to build faster and efficiently without damaging quality. This has allowed us to have shorter lead times than many other rifle builders in the industry. We optimize the flow in the shop and use batching to save time without saving it on the machine.
As hard as we work to get things out faster, there will always be situations that we cannot predict. Receiving the components from the manufacturer ties us to their timelines. They also have a lot of orders to fulfill and want to keep the quality the customer wants. We never want to start focusing on quantity like many mainstream shelf rifles have done to get the product out.
When we take an order, we begin the process of getting the materials to fulfill this order. We often have some components on the shelf to cut the lead time down. It is hard to predict what the customers will be asking for each time, making it hard to have the right products. The industry often changes, creating another hurdle when stocking the shelves with the right components.
What You Can Expect From Straight Jacket.
Box store rifle builders are moving to specific minute of angle (MOA) group size guarantees. At Straight Jacket, we carry a customer satisfaction guarantee. Our barrels and rifles will shoot to your satisfaction, or we will work to get that rifle where you want it. Of course, we ask that you keep it within reason.
We always expect our quality to be half MOA or better when we build a product. It is reasonable that most shooters can shoot one MOA if they are a decent shot. If you do your job, the rifle will do its. If there is a problem, we will get on the phone and diagnose the issue as best we can to see what could be happening with the rifle outside our control. If we’ve determined that we need to see it, we will have you send it to us and we’ll fix anything on our end. I assure you we rarely see any rifles back, and more often than not, it’s a cleaning issue.

Pre-Fit Barrels: Our Bread and Butter.
We start by building threaded barrels for your action and chambered with the round you want to use. Not all actions are pre-fit capable, It’s best to contact us first to make sure yours is capable. Some actions can be sent in, and we’ll build the barrel for it. Some actions are not worth trying to re-barrel altogether.
With the action, length, contour, and chamber decided, we turn the barrel to your specs. Carbon barrels have to keep to the original length. Steel barrels have more play in deciding to change lengths. After the barrel is cut, we ship it to you so you can install it yourself.
The best quality barrels with the best quality chambers will always create a better shooting experience. The most important part of the pre-fit barrel is how the threads and chambers are cut. You can have the highest quality barrel ever made, but if the chamber is not centered to the tightest tolerance, it will not shoot accurately. That’s why we take the time to do it right without rushing or getting more done than quality permits.
Barreled Actions: The Best Place to Start.
If you don’t already have an action, but want the best rifle you can get from a rifle builder, a barreled action will be key. The barrelled action will get you started with the basics of what you need for shooting. We offer several actions that allow you the right platform for your build. Our options at Straight Jacket are based on the Remington 700 footprint.
If you already have a stock or chassis that runs the Rem 700 action, you can get one of our barreled actions. We also have Trigger Tech and Timney triggers in stock to send with the barreled action. These days, suppressors have become popular. If you don’t have one, we have muzzle brakes like the Hellfires and SARVs to put on the barrel.
Any barreled action we offer comes with an action that is pre-fit capable. Once you have the new platform for your rifle, you can keep it shooting with the pre-fit barrels. Custom rifles start with the action. With this option, you can have one of our barrels already installed, saving you time.
